Our Daily Bread 19 August 2017 Devotional – From Grief to Joy

Our Daily Bread 19 August 2017 Devotional – From Grief to Joy

Topic: From Grief to Joy — Saturday August 19, 2017.

Read: John 16:16–22, Bible in a Year: Psalms 103–104; 1 Corinthians 2

You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. John 16:20

Kelly’s pregnancy brought complications, and doctors were concerned. During her long labor, they decided to whisk her away for a Cesarean section. But despite the ordeal, Kelly quickly forgot her pain when she held her newborn son. Joy had replaced anguish.
Scripture affirms this truth: “A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world” (John 16:21). Jesus used this illustration with His disciples to emphasize that though they would grieve because He would be leaving soon, that grief would turn to joy when they saw Him again (vv. 20–22).

Matthew 19:5 "And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?"

MATTHEW 19:3-5

What does it mean for a man and a woman to become "one flesh?" The act of sexual intercourse between a man and a woman produces this one flesh relationship. Whether or not the man and woman ever cleave to each other in marriage; the physical act still binds them together as one flesh.

Constantly keep in mind Jesus Christ (the Messiah) [as] risen from the dead… - 2 Timothy 2:8, The Amplified Bible

This is the key to holding on to the blessings of God. When pressure comes, when troubles and trials are bearing down on you, remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead!
Remember that when Jesus arose, you arose. When He came out of hell and defeated the enemy, you came out of hell and defeated the enemy. His victory is your victory because you’re in Him.
In the hard places, remember that. When the devil tells you you’re not going to get your answer this time, remember that. When he tells you there’s no way out, you remember Christ, the Anointed One, the Victorious Conqueror, risen from the dead and seated at the right hand of the Father!

Scripture: Then Daniel requested of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel sat in the gate of the king. Daniel 2:49

Thought For The Day: To live for self is to live for less.
It is obvious that there is a category of people that God takes to the highest level of life. Daniel was in that category. We have x-rayed the life of Daniel and what took him to the top in life. And today we are looking at more of what it takes to live at our best from the life of Daniel.
The Bible has confirmed that Daniel was a man who was too afraid of God to be afraid of man. He was not afraid of going to the lion’s den as a result of maintaining a sound relationship with God (Daniel 6:10). He also preferred to be misunderstood by men instead of God being misrepresented. He saw himself as the representative of God.

“And he arose and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.” Luke 15:20 (KJV)

Still, on the story of the prodigal son, the father did not wait for him to approach the house, he ran to meet him, embraced him and brought him home. That is the degree of love that God has for you. As His child, He is not waiting for you to come crawling, His arms are spread out to receive you. As a believer, you need to get yourself established in the knowledge, unwavering belief, and total acceptance of God’s love for you.

In the parable of The Good Samaritan, there were two religious leaders who saw a wounded man in great need but passed by without helping. Yet a Samaritan, belonging to a race that was highly despised, "as he journeyed, came where (the man) was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him".

Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo Gives 8 Reasons To Stop Blaming The Devil

A Nigerian Pastor, Biodun Fatoyinbo of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA) church has used his social media platform to campaign “Don’t Blame The Devil,” when we should blame ourselves.
The church is said to raise men and women who would take over in every sector and sphere of life. Pastor Biodun started this trend on his Instagram which he called#DontBlameTheDevil that involved creating images about a series of instances when we compromise based on our ignorance or sheer laziness and end up blaming the devil for the situation.
Fatoyinbo referred to most people in Nigeria whom he said always find a way around pushing the blame to the Devil and since he is not available to either accept or deny the blame, they sometimes get away with it.
Hence he insisted people should stop blaming the devil and take responsibilities for their actions. According to Fatoyinbo below are the reasons to stop blaming the devil.

Each of us is an original from God’s hand. There are no self-made men or women. No one ever became talented, buffed, or bright all by himself or herself. God made each of us all by Himself. He thought of us and formed us out of His unspeakable love.
God made your body, mind, and soul. And He isn’t done with you; He is still making you. His single-minded purpose is our maturity: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Phil. 1:6). God is making you braver, stronger, purer, more peaceful, more loving, less selfish—the kind of person you’ve perhaps always wanted to be.

The Pharisees didn't really want to know what Jesus taught on divorce and remarriage. They didn't value His opinion but were tempting Him and desired to get Him mired in the big dispute of their day between liberal and conservative views on divorce. This was a very emotional issue then, just as it is today, and they thought they had Jesus in a "no win" situation.

The parable of the prodigal son is a very familiar story amongst believers and unbelievers alike. However, I want to draw your attention to some truths from this parable to further strengthen your belief in God’s unconditional, irreversible, and everlasting love for you. The prodigal son received his inheritance from his father and travelled to a distant land, where he squandered it on various activities. By his request and subsequent action, this young man displayed a rebellious nature of wanting to live independently of his father’s will. A position that many of us find ourselves in today, even as Christians.

…Put no confidence or dependence [on what we are] in the flesh and on outward privileges and physical advantages and external appearances. - Philippians 3:3

Everyone talks about self-confidence. All kinds of seminars are available on confidence, both in the secular world and the church world. Confidence is generally referred to as "self-confidence" because we all know that we need to feel good about ourselves if we are ever to accomplish anything in life. We have been taught that all people have a basic need to believe in themselves. However, that is a misconception. Actually, we do not need to believe in ourselves—we need to believe in Jesus in us. We do not dare feel good about ourselves apart from Him. In the above scripture, when the apostle Paul instructs us to put no confidence in the flesh, he means just what he says—do not put confidence in yourself or in anything you can do apart from Jesus.

Luke 18:9 "And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:"

LUKE 18:9-14

People who are self-righteous often despise others. No one can compare himself with God's perfect standard and feel good about himself. To trust in ourselves, we have to constantly compare ourselves with others. This breeds a critical attitude towards others that exalts self by debasing others.
No one can ever be righteous in the sight of God through his own righteousness. Our actions benefit us in relationships with people and prevent Satan from having an opportunity against us, but they cannot make us right (righteous) with God. We must trust in God and receive His gift of righteousness completely on the basis of faith in what Christ did for us. This is the truth that this parable is presenting.

Thought For The Day: The quality of a man’s life is reduced by iniquity
From scriptures, it can be established that Daniel, who was taken to Babylon as captive, lived life at its best. He became the head politically, academically and spiritually. The same Daniel purposed in his heart that he will not defile himself with the portion of the Kings food (Daniel 1:8). He ended in excellence and became the best example of whatever he did in Babylon.

When God told Moses to write a song (Deuteronomy 32), it was to remind the children of Israel how much He loved and cared for them. That song shows the deep affection God has for His people and His great desire for them to obey Him and prosper. He said, "O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end! How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up?" The same God cares about the inter-personal relationships among His people.
